Applications for medical cards for people aged over 70 will now be processed within 15 days, Health Minister Mary Harney has promised.

Minister Harney has informed the Oireachtas Health Committee that the waiting time, of up to 16 weeks for the cards, is being reduced.

There have been widespread problems with the application process since it was centralised to a Health Service Executive office in Finglas in Dublin last year.
